Chemical Testing Service Assay analysis by Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detection (GC-FID)
Assay analysis by Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detection (GC-FID) is a powerful analytical technique used to determine the concentration and purity of compounds within a sample.
In GC-FID, the sample is first vaporized and injected into a chromatographic column, which separates the individual components based on their chemical properties such as volatility, polarity, and molecular size. The separated compounds then elute from the column and enter the detector.
The Flame Ionization Detector (FID) is the most commonly used detector in GC-FID analysis. In the FID, the eluted compounds are combusted in a hydrogen flame, producing ions and electrons. These ions and electrons generate a small electrical current, which is directly proportional to the amount of compound present in the sample. This current is amplified and recorded by the detector, providing a chromatogram that represents the concentration of each compound as a function of time.
GC-FID offers several advantages, including high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, and excellent selectivity. It can detect a wide range of compounds, from volatile organic compounds to non-polar hydrocarbons, making it suitable for a diverse array of applications.
