Chemical Testing Service Total Silicone analysis by ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectrometry)
Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), also known as ICP-atomic emission spectroscopy, is the preferred method for analyzing the elemental composition of samples in various fields. These fields encompass environmental, metallurgical, geological, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, materials, and food safety applications. It accommodates diverse sample types, including aqueous and organic liquids, as well as solids. Certain sample types may require specific preparation methods or the use of specialized accessories to facilitate their introduction into the ICP-OES instrument. ICP-OES offers several advantages compared to other elemental analysis techniques such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). These advantages include a wide linear dynamic range, high tolerance to matrix effects, and the ability to achieve rapid analysis speeds.
What is ICP-OES? A plasma is a gas, typically argon gas is used in ICP. It contains a significant quantity of argon ions. This plasma is generated by introducing electrons into the argon gas passing through a plasma torch. As the electrons interact with argon atoms, more electrons are released, leading to the formation of argon ions. Elements, existing as atoms, are then introduced into the plasma. Some of these atoms undergo ionization within the plasma environment. When an atom or ion is stimulated within the plasma, its electrons transition from lower to higher energy levels. As these electrons return to their original 'ground' state, they emit energy in the form of photons. These emitted photons exhibit characteristic wavelengths specific to their respective elements.
