Magnesium Carbonate, also known as Magnesium Carbonate Basic Pentahydrate, Magnesium Hydroxycarbonate Pentahydrate, Magnesium Hydroxy Carbonate Pentahydrate, and Carbonic Acid, is often available as basic pentahydrate of Magnesium(2+) Carbonate having the chemical formula C 4 H 12 Mg 5 O 19 or (MgCo 3 ) 4 -Mg(OH) 2 -5H 2 O. It appears as white odorless air/moisture sensitive powder and is insoluble in water at ambient conditions. Upon heating, it may release Carbon Oxides or other toxic vapors as the decomposition products. It’s a key source of Magnesium that can easily be converted to other Magnesium compounds, such as the oxide by heating (calcination).
