Naphthalene is the simplest of the fused or condensed ring hydrocarbon compounds, with a chemical formula of C 10 H 8 . It is made up of two benzene rings fused together. Naphthalene is the most common single component of coal tar, which is a volatile byproduct of destructive coal distillation. It is also produced via modern methods by using high-temperature petroleum cracking. At room temperature, it appears as a whitish crystalline solid with a strong odor. It may be found in a range of plant species' essential oils, including magnolia. It is a volatile oil component, a plant metabolite, an environmental contaminant, a moth repellant, and a carcinogenic agent.
